James Cousins Company was set up by James Cousins in 2014 in order to create compelling dance productions with a team of internationally renowned dancers and collaborators.
In order to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, one of the latest productions, which is currently on tour, is Rosalind; a character from Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'. A compelling performance portraying the symbol of progressive womanhood, 'Rosalind' is the contemporary adaptation with an abstract narrative conveyed through movement and resonant poetry.
It was important for this invigorating performance to keep the audience fixated on the dancers while still having a set which had presence on stage. Therefore, the dancers' costumes were minimalistic with pale nude colours so as the dancers would appear to be naked and raw, and the back-drop was left dark and almost hidden by the beam of our Mini Neon cube set.
Invisible Light UK required a large neon-coloured skeletal cube to establish a set in which the dancers could perform, pass through and travel around, but needed the cube to illuminate the dancers without overpowering them. Our Mini Neon was the ideal luminaire choice for the lining of the cube because of its reassured profile mounting, narrow body, as well as its 18.5 mm height. The Mini Neon is highly secured in its profile, ensuring that it will stay intact and fulfill its purpose regardless of potential rough-handling during the performance and whilst being transported. Additionally, it has a great diffusion of light which produces a continuous smooth lighting that is dimmable.
In the end, it was the idealistic visually striking object which the lighting designer requested, and the simple design complemented the elaborately textured choreography.
