What is light? Why does it matter and why do we need lighting designers? When speaking about 'light' it refers to the range of electromagnetic spectrum, which includes visible light, as well as light rays which are invisible for the human eyes.

The International Day of Light is an opportunity to highlight the wider importance of light in our society. Lighting technology such as photonics provide the base of modern technology, from TVs and laptops to medical devices and defence technologies. Moreover, lighting is a communication medium and impacts human comfort and performance.

Emotions

Emotions

Lighting is able to connect people with their environment and evoke powerful emotions. Warm-toned lighting provide a feeling of comfort and happiness, while cool-toned lighting sets a more serious atmosphere but can also make us feel more energetic.

Well-being

The right lighting design is important to improve visual comfort by eliminating glare and flickering, by setting the appropriate brightness and by coordinating the beam angle of the lighting source. By reducing bright cool-toned light in bedroom and relaxation areas, lighting can also ease the transition from wake to sleep cycle.

Well-being
Aesthetics

Aesthetics

Lighting has a key role in creating attractive environments and presenting objects and people in a favourable manner. Aesthetics can be influenced by light brightness, direction and colour render ability. Bright environments appear to be more inviting and a lighting design, which balances shade, increases visual attractiveness. Excellent visual presentation is also dependent on authenticity which can be achieved by accurate colour rendering to portray objects true to their natural colours.

Visual identity

Brands can use lighting to underline their visual brand identity. Lighting concepts can reflect the desired brand personality - whether it is bold brand light and shade contrasts, a relaxed dimmed environment, or a fun colour-changing light concept.

Organise spaces

Organise spaces

Lighting is able to highlight the distinct structures and physical features of a space in architectural design, while shading can hide certain objects if desired. In addition, lighting can serve as visual guidance - ranging from emergency lights to lights recessed in stairs.
